Volunteer Profile: Adriana

“There is nothing stronger in the world than the heart of a volunteer.”

Adriana’s journey as a volunteer at Frog Hollow has been one of profound growth, healing, and gratitude — a testament to how transformative and uplifting welcoming spaces like Frog Hollow can be for newcomers.

Originally from Colombia, Adriana arrived in Canada with overwhelming emotions of depression, isolation, and vulnerability, as this period was a rather tumultuous time in her personal life as well. Despite these adversities, Adriana reclaimed her sense of purpose and belonging through volunteering at Frog Hollow’s Spanish family drop-in program (La Colmena) and various neighbourhood house events — discovering a community that embraced her with open arms.

From the moment she joined Frog Hollow, Adriana felt that she was met with unwavering support, leadership, and trust from the staff. She considers it a tremendous honour to have worked under the guidance of such experienced and knowledgeable individuals. “[Their] leadership has been fundamental in my professional development,” Adriana reflects, recalling the many moments of growth, the invaluable advice she received, and the confidence she gained knowing her voice was truly heard and valued.

One of the most enriching aspects of Adriana’s volunteering journey was working with children at La Colmena. It was precisely through this experience that she discovered her true vocation: Her passion for supporting and nurturing young minds. Adriana found immense joy in bringing happiness to the children’s lives through engaging with them in daily activities and special events.

Perhaps Adriana’s most cherished memory volunteering with Frog Hollow was at the Harvest Festival event in the summer, where she dressed as a mermaid! She regards this as an unforgettable experience, as families and children eagerly asked for photos. Being overwhelmed with joy in that moment, she felt as though she was reconnecting with her inner child, describing it as “so much fun and feeling like [she] became a girl again.”

Beyond her sense of fulfilment gained from working with children, Adriana found solace in the love and kindness of the program leaders and staff at Frog Hollow. “The staff have been able to inspire, motivate, and have shown great humanity in understanding each situation,” she recounts. This feeling of deep support carried from her volunteer work into her personal life, helping uplift her during difficult times.

As she reflects on her time with Frog Hollow, Adriana considers her volunteering experience at La Colmena and various events as an incredible privilege, treasuring the lessons and values she has gained. She remains forever grateful to the team at Frog Hollow for their kindness, patience, and positive influence, hoping to carry forward everything she has learned. Adriana firmly believes that “there is nothing stronger in the world than the heart of a volunteer.” Through her dedication and passion, she has not only given back to her community but has also found a renewed sense of purpose and direction, attributing Frog Hollow’s pivotal role in shaping her path — a chapter of her life she holds close to her heart.
