Over 50 seniors received hot meals cooked by young people during the pandemic in 2020.
All hot meals were delivered right to the doors for the elderly by Frog Hollow staff and volunteers. Some of the volunteers were seniors themselves.

Frog Hollow Seniors Program collaborated with the YES CHEF! Program, a 10-week cooking program for newcomer youth, aiming to support the older generation to feel safe and connected during the coronavirus lock-down and social distancing.
“I reached out to Frog Hollow Seniors Program for an opportunity for our youth participants from YES CHEF! to cook a meal for our seniors in the community,” says Paulina, the Newcomer Youth Coordinator of the YES CHEF! Program at Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House. “It was part of their last assignment: being able to cook for a big group of 20-25 people.”
For each cohort, 4 youth participants were trained. The first delivery took place in September 2020, reaching over 25 seniors.
“Right now I am only able to cook very simple dishes for myself. I am so grateful the youth can prepare such flavorful food!”
With the seniors’ positive feedback, we made a second delivery on November, 25 more elderly benefited.
We delivered to most seniors who lived across the Hastings-Sunrise area, some in the Renfrew-Collingwood area, and a couple of exceptions to the Champaign Height area.
“This was a great intergenerational opportunity between youth and seniors,” Lysandra, the Seniors Program Coordinator, commented, “with youth being able to apply the skills they learnt to serve the society during these challenging times, and the seniors to receive ready-made delicious food and feel loved and connected. “
The hot meals and the opportunity to see staff and volunteers from afar through the delivery brought huge smiles to seniors.
The collaboration between the Seniors Program and YES CHEF! Program will continue in the year 2021. We welcome you to be part of it!
