For the past ten years, Frog Hollow Children Centres have been inspired in their work by the Reggio Emilia philosophy and its rich approach toward children, their families and the community. Our passion for, and belief in, children’s right to high quality education that supports experiential learning in a community of strong, respectful relationships has led our team on a continuing journey of exploration, reflection & collaboration.
Through our experience, we recognized that there were limited opportunities for professional development in the Reggio approach in Vancouver and BC overall. While there are pockets of passionate professionals and individuals working to learn about the approach and share their knowledge, there is no one place to come together, access resources and visit for exemplary learning opportunities.
In 2016, these challenges and the inspiration of visits to established Learning Centres – including the city of Reggio Emilia itself – led us to begin the development of Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House’s Reggio-Inspired Learning Centre.
In early 2017, we convened a cross-disciplinary advisory committee comprised of professionals, educators and academic leaders in Metro Vancouver to support the development of the Frog Hollow Learning Centre. The centre continues to reach out to other organizations around the Lower Mainland, including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge to create partnerships and opportunities for collaboration.
The Learning Centre’s main goals are to:
Provide training and support to organizations, professionals and families in a Reggio-inspired approach to working with children
Creatively apply the Reggio principles and values to the cultural, geographical, and financial realities of those interested in embracing this approach in BC
Work in partnership with other Reggio–inspired groups and associations to bring together the community in Metro Vancouver and BC
Create opportunities for discussions and dialogue with Reggio–inspired professionals, educators, academics and families
Work with the community to advocate for the rights of children as citizens of today
